Booksellers and Numismatic Supplies

Booksellers   Magazines   Numismatic Supplies

We firmly believe that ancient coin collectors need to spend a portion of their coin budget on building a reference library. It need not be big or expensive, but the basic reference works for your area of collecting should be included. To that end we have put together a list of online book sellers that may be able to fill your needs.

We will be adding to this list as time goes on. If anyone has an bookseller they would like to recommend, please feel free to email us with the information.

Booksellers (Specialists)

Ancient Coin Reference Review
You have heard the phrase "Buy the book before you buy the coin". Well, this is a case of buying the book before you buy the book to buy the coin. {grin} Written by Dennis Kroh, this book is considered a standard reference work listing hundreds of ancient coin reference books. If your collecting budget is limited then the $25 spent on this book will be a wise investment. Find out which reference books will fit your requirements before you spend the money.

Empire Books
Well known to the ancients community. Empire Books stocks a wide range of ancient coin collecting reference works. They also periodically hold mail bid auctions (mail, fax, email) where you can find all kinds of goodies including many rare and out-of-print references. There should be an auction soon so take the time to pay a visit.

Krause Publications
A leading publisher of numismatic books. There is not much available for the ancients collector, but it is worth a visit. The beginning collector will find the Wayne Sayles series 'Collecting Ancient Coins' a valuable set of references worth the price.

Papyrus Books
Specialists in literature on ancient numismatics and antiquities. Complimentary catalogs on request.

Numismatic Arts of Santa Fe
Art Rubino isn't online with a web site, yet. But he has converted his 200+ page catalog to an email format. You can reach him via email to see what he has available. Or call him at: 505 982-8792
Art also carries numismatic supplies such as Micro-Renaissance Wax and acid free coin envelopes.

Edward J Waddell, Ltd.
I don't usually make it a practice to advertise other coin dealers, but Waddells also has a nice little selection of reference books available at his web site. He takes credit cards online and the shipping is super fast. Pay him a visit, you won't regret it.

The Brooklyn Gallery of Coins and Stamps
A great place to go if you need standard reference works at a discount. Unfortunetely their web site shows only a small portion of what is available in the catalog. So give them a call and ask for a copy. They can be reached at: (718) 745-5701

Booksellers (Mass Market)

If you cannot find the book you want at the specialty sellers, then give the mass market book sellers a try. The 2 largest currently online are:

Amazon.Com

Barnes and Noble

Magazines

The only ancients publication that is available to the general public (without having to join an organization) in the USA that I know of is the Celator. If anyone has information on other ancient coin oriented magazines, please email me with the address and I will check it out.

The Celator
The Celator is named for and dedicated to the coin die-engravers of antiquity whose art remains as powerful and appealing today as in their own time.

This the Celators mission statement and pretty much describes what you will find each month. It is highly recommeneded for the serious student of ancient coinage. IMHO, the ads alone make having a subscription worthwhile. They can be contacted at: (417) 679-2142

Numismatic Supplies

The Brooklyn Gallery of Coins and Stamps
A great place to go if you need supplies such as flips, coin cases, magnifying glasses, etc. Unfortunetely their web site shows only a small portion of what is available in the catalog. So give them a call and ask for a copy. They can be reached at: (718) 745-5701

Safe Publications Inc.
A manufacturer of coin collecting storage supplies such as cases and albums. To quote their web site, "All material that comes in contact with your coins and medals is archival quality and is 100% free of plasticizers (chemical softening agents) and free of stearates. The foil used does not contain plasticized PVC. Don't trust your collection in anything that doesn't have the SAFE logo on it." Check out their web site to see if their products fill your storage needs.
